“A Chicken In De Fridge” a carnival haiku fiction; February 11 – 13th 2013, ends today; hope you enjoyed reading.
Please remember (All the characters in this story are fictitious and do not refer to anyone in real life)
Part 3 – Pssst, nice woman
“Pssst, nice woman”, a voice accosted across the traffic aisle, as a silver grey private car sped past. The taxi driver and the other passengers in unison chimed in “but aaa a it have some real fresh ole men these days oui”, and everyone in the taxi steups except Gemma who smiled inwardly, careful not to reveal her delight, to her just now, acquired posse. Little did they know she had awaken in the pre hours of dawn in the gently arms of this joker. Alard had a healthy sense of humor and this was a vivid display. It was a private interlude, theirs. It was a funny interlude, theirs. It was Alard’s car, on his way to work also, which had by sheer coincidental timing, had passed along side the taxi. The rest of the journey proved uneventful despite the early morning stream of traffic going in the direction of down town, with its crawls and stops, and not because of traffic lights. That was the setting during peak hours going in the direction of town.
She got off at her stop, Elizabeth Street and walked a short way to her work place. She felt like a hobbit as she turned into the entrance of the ficus covered wall. A trail of Sunflower scent preceded her as she ascended the short lift of steps to sign the attendance register. It was Ash Wednesday and she was never late. The carnival was over. It was back to work with just as much fervor.
Jackson was there before her, he was her all fours partner, and there was a game on that Friday after work. This was an important game, there were coffee mugs to be won by the champions. Jackson teased “You got a tan girl, I hope that man didn’t tire you out too much and you have energy left in you for this Friday after work lime” “Tire me out, which man could do that” she hurled back at him. “That same one who I don’t like for you, that is who I talking about“. She answered laughing , “You will never like him for me , you like you for me, ent?” And she sauntered away going towards her desk.

Its Carnival Tuesday, A safe and Happy Carnival to all.
The story A Chicken In De Fridge continues February 11 – 13th 2013. Remember, this is a haiku fiction story. All the characters in this story are fictitious and do not refer to anyone in real life
Part 2 –Change In De Costume
“Where were you Miss Gemma, you forgot we have to pick up our head pieces this morning.” “Well you must be hard of hearing because I tell you where I was going when I was leaving last night. What time Val say she coming to pick us up?” “She should be here any minute now so you better get ready” “Get ready? girl look at me I cant be any readier than this” Look at this vision of Carnival Saturday morning loveliness”.
Val’s car eased to a stop at Gemma’s gate. She sounded the horn pop pooopp and adjusted her rear view mirror. Yeah, she was good, she didn’t have to freshen up her makeup, though she pulled out a tissue and gave her nose a hurried little pat and then threw the tissue into her handbag. “Where’s Gemma? She not coming with us? I hope she don’t think I picking up any head piece for her” “Something about the lipstick colour clashing with the top she wearing, she coming out in a while” “I hope she know I have to make groceries for my mother today, you better go back inside and drag she out the house with what ever colour lipstick because I don’t have whole day to spend in front she house” Is alright she coming now”
“Morning Val where you get them shorts? They real cute” “Cute my grandmother fanny! you know I have other things to do beside pick up headpiece today” look at the time already” The girls were off to a good start, that was the essence of their liming; spates of heated bickering, but they were best buds. These musketeers were one for all and all for one. Val drove into Woodbrook to collect the head pieces, the rest of the costumes they had already collected days before, but some extra work had to be done to the headgear and Saturday was the delivery day for their section of the band.
The oversized white ghost heads with goggle eyes were all ready when they got there and each one showed their receipt and collected the correctly fitted oversized head. Of course, they had to be carried exposed and by hand, because they were so huge. As a courtesy however, the section were given standards which were added as a bonus for the inconvenience caused to players for having to come back to collect their headpieces after the rest of their costumes. Some players didn’t appreciate this gesture at all, because they didn’t like carrying standards, which they had not chosen in the first place, they had chosen a costume which allowed them to have their hands free. Gemma and her posse fell into that group, but they accepted the standards anyway.
They wended their way back to St James, Val dropping off Gemma and Drusilla, then heading off to Tru Value to purchase her mother’s groceries, and then off to Deigo. They would met in the Savannah on Carnival Monday.

Me...2013 Jigsaw Puzzle

Today is my birthday, thank you for your visits and comments; and wishing you a lovely day too.
… so sit back, relax, I’ll tell you a carnival story…
(All the characters in this story are fictitious and do not refer to anyone in real life)
I now invite you to read and enjoy “A Chicken In De Fridge” a carnival haiku fiction; appearing in 3 Parts, right here, at Lunch Break, February 11 – 13th 2013
Part 1 – De Fete
“Here, I brought you a chicken” said Drusilla offering the frozen bird wrapped in a grocery bag. Gemma accepted this sharing of goodwill without fanfare or pretension. “Thanks girl, we sure to have something home cooked to eat over the weekend” she laughed. The fridge door slammed and Gemma swiveled pointing the direction of the bedroom her friend was to occupy during the weekend stay in St James. It would be her first Carnival in costume and Drusilla was ready.
Having unpacked and settled in, she ventured to find herself the bathroom on her own. “Aa, you have real nice soap here girl” Drusilla shouted through the cold water as it splattered over the clear plastic shower cap. Her friend oblivious to her observations offered no reply, she was absorbed in conversation with Alard, over the telephone.
The street was alive with tourists, and St James folk going to and fro. The side walk vendors put on their busy faces so as not to show how pleasing this season was to their pockets. All they wanted to communicate was the hard work this busy time was bearing down on them. Alard’s car swerved so as not to get his front hit by an on coming driver. A riddle of expletives issued from the car of the protagonist. But this was the tempo of the street especially now the alcohol imbibing was heightened.
As if cognizant of her settings, nature cooled the evening with breezes ruffling through the trees in the neighborhood, but no one noticed. There was too much hype, it was after all Carnival Friday night. The main street bars spilled their patronage into the street, making it extremely difficult for cars weaving through revelers, who either had no money to spend on fetes, or shows in The Savannah, or didn’t want to dress up to carry no woman to sit down to watch no show, when they could buy some beers and wine up here in the road for free.
And so, the Friday night, so special, so sacred to the zeal of bacchanal, progressed on the Western Main Road in St James. Alard swerved into the corner and stopped in front of Gemma’s house. He didn’t have to blow the horn, as if by instinct, she knew he was outside the house. She shouted something to Drusilla through the closed bedroom door and was out the wrought iron gate in a flash.
Their lips touched briefly in a pouty kiss, in the darkness. Alard glanced, he tried to imagine her as if she was under bright lights, he didn’t have to turn on the light in the car. She asked if she could take the wheel from there but he declined. To his mind the kind of madness on the roads these carnival nights, he had best master the wheel.
They got to Lion’s fete, but neither of them really wanted to be in this aspect of the carnival. For them, their contribution to the bacchanalia, was to be dressed in costume dancing in the hot sun all day Monday and Tuesday. But the compel of carnival rhythm, drew them into the fete, only for a short while.
The waves from his waterbed were gentle and calming as the ship of their loved sailed through the dawn hours of their after party sleep in. She awoke to his urgent kisses and a quick glance of sunlight streaming through the green leafy poui tree outside the window. Eeling out of his insatiable grasp, she slipped into one of his shirts and headed to the bath room. He stretched and pressed the play button on the portable bedside radio. The tape spun quietly for a mere second then the strains of their favourite lullaby echoed through, “…but time keeps flowing like a river to the sea to the sea” filling him with even more longing.

Its carnival time again when the generic 'play' transcends generations in the costumed game of life out in the streets. Yes; we trinis love to 'play we mas' and when we don't play, we cheer on the players. Sunday is best reserved for the children, and mums dads and caregivers chip along fussing over their charges.
