Today i'm thinking '...that was some rain yesterday afternoon'
...setting out, to go to Saturday Evening Mass, a touch of sunshine still brightening the Saturday sky, i stop to talk to a neighbour, holding a baby in her arms. Then, a flash of really heavy rain, sends me back home to grab a large umbrella and opt to taxi instead. I get to church clutching tightly my umbrella and holding it low over my head, keeping my eyes low, peeled to the ground, so i would not step in puddles...
ordinary time -
green vestments worn by the priest
Sunday savvy
*
yet every blade of grass
welcomes that sudden rain
*
slow and leisurely
to a quickening hurried -
sky dictates the pace

have always loved the concept of 'ordinary time' in the church calendar - and your poem is anything but ordinary - lovely - K

Yes, the grass and trees are grateful for rain. Especially mid-summer.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of the sky dictating the pace & also the way you celebrate ordinary time!
ReplyDeleteDelightful.
ReplyDeleteThe sky does quicken my pace. Though with a disabled family member to assist I get soaked.
I love how "sky dictates the pace".. and brings rhythm to all...beautifully done Gillena :)
ReplyDeleteLoving the haiku about the priest's garments - that used to fascinate me as a kid - the symbolism of the various colors.
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
I was disappointed to find out years ago that green vestments meant ordinary Sunday as though there was not much to celebrate; which is clearly not the case. It is the same with rain and the Oh no not again can be dispelled by holding hands letting it fall on your faces while laughing, much like plants do!

Lovely thinking and writing! I really like your combination of prose and micropoems, somewhat like a haibun.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your appreciation Rosemary, i did mean to include 'haibun' in my labels but forgot; i will edit to include 'haibun'

Leslie, thank you for your appreciation, hope you remember to cover that disabled child with an umbrella, always carry one of those folded ones, in your handbag

The rain that come suddenly can for sure surprise us.. but the greenery will absorb it quickly when it's warm
