what a curve ball
this covid 19 spins
dreams asunder
so much alone time
the mask of distance removed
her quiet sighs
life lingers not
for so many have left like
a puff of smoke

A curve ball indeed, Gillena! You have encapsulated 2020 in the lines:
ReplyDelete‘so much alone time
the mask of distance removed’
and
‘…so many have left like
a puff of smoke’.
Despite Covid, we’re determined to be happy this Christmas. Have a merry one, Gillena, and let's look forward to a better new year.
Thank you for your appreciation Kim

Sadly we shouldn't fight the virus but just hide from it!

Can't wait for 2020 to go, but I did learn a few lessons.

Yes (on the second poem). It's unbelievably sad, and somehow with so many passing, each one seems to slip away like smoke, as you wrote.

That last stanza really hits home for so many. Too many lost. Wishing you a blessed Sunday dear Gillena.

These poems together capture this year's suspended celebrations -- how do we acknowledge traditions as we miss them? Wonderful and sad at the same time.
ReplyDeleteSo many gone like a puff of smoke....so tragically true. Sorrow clouds the world with grief, and we try to salvage some traditions. Even Santa is confused!

In the US our ads now have masked people, and we have been told that Santa has not only had the vaccine, but has a natural immunity to the virus as well! I guess some kids were worried.
ReplyDelete"a puff of smoke" seems the way sometimes. I read my state's daily COVID update (when the list of deaths isn't too long), and wonder at how quickly it is for some, the time between diagnosed and death. Sometimes it's just a day or two.

Masking up means everything these days...the difference between life and death. Merry Christmas, Gillena!

Too many are gone, I wonder how many would have been spared by the use of a mask.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas!
Stay safe and healthy

In the midst of Holiday Magic, it's fitting to pay homage to those who we have lost to this horrific pandemic. Thinking of you today ... wishing you a large helping of the Magic.

Most worrying to cross over the New Year when things are getting worse by the minute. The mask is helpful in boosting confidence more than what it is doing.

I am thankful I am still here with the curveball this year has tossed me. I wear my mask in hopes next year will open doors where we can travel without it.

Just as some were exulting that the coronavirus death rate in the U.S. wasn't above average, it leaped up...nevertheless, the mask poem that comes to mind is on the flippant side:
ReplyDeleteOthers complain, but
I love that fashion lets me
cover up these teeth.
(Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez really does look like a daughter I never had, with those teeth, the poor little thing.)

I particularly like your response to The Sunday Muse this week. Thanks for sharing. Have a good final couple of days of Advent! Maranatha!
ReplyDeleteLove this, Gillena! Mask up, Santa.
ReplyDeleteGillena,
ReplyDeleteYour Sunday Muse #139 photo and haiku are spot on. The words and photo are too true and too sad and i share it all.

Strong piece Gillena. So true! Well written. I am listening to Laura’s album “Angel In The Dark” as I write this. Damn she was so good. She us way too soon! Her life felt like s puff of smoke.
ReplyDeleteNasty little curveball indeed from nasty Covid. Good riddance though I am getting used to wearing a mask. Happy New Year!
