Today is 'Saint Nicholas Day' celebrating the life of Saint Nicholas of Myra, a fourth-century bishop best known today as the real-life model for Santa Claus. The American Santa Claus, as well as the British Father Christmas, derive from these legends. Santa Claus is itself derived in part from the Dutch Sinterklaas.Traditionally it is also the day when Catholic churches would bless and distribute candy canes
