this photo, first published here at Lunch Break, Chacachacare Saturday March 19th 2011, when i recorded a visit of my book club to the island of Chacachacare, which was used for the setting of 'Prospero's Daughter' a novel written by Trinidadian Elizabeth Nunez.
Today's haiku written in response to the prompt at
Carpe Diem #787 Lighthouse of Alexandria (reprise)
...Gardner went to the lighthouse alone after that. Each time he returned exhausted, his eyes glassy, his limbs limp, his skin pale. He collapsed into his bed and slept for hours. Whenever a rainstorm threatened, he became agitated. Before the first drop fell,he was off again to the lighthouse his bag on his back, his cane in his hand. As irrational as it seemed to me then, I found myself thinking that it was he, not nature, that had caused that terrible storm that had brought him to us, he who had engineered it...[google search excerpt, from 'Prospero's Daughter]

Ah, the mountains do lure a person, don't they? Who can ignore their call!
ReplyDeletereminds how mystical storms can feel - and the confusion of understanding if they are outside or inside

This is wonderful: the excerpt and your piece that follows. "sea spray" - I thought was a perfect connector/intro for the two pieces.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful post Gillena. i love the excerpt. It made me want to read the book. Then your poems are all outstanding. Enjoyed this so much!
ReplyDeleteWhen the elements are on the move particularly the wind and the clouds there is a stirring within us whether to hide or run and and join them. I must confess Like "Gardner" I often dare to walk with the wind and rain falling on my face. Excellent piece Gillena.
ReplyDeleteI love that the mountains are cradling the lighthouse...that's a beautiful image.
