Ever considered The Daffodil as a Lenten flower? well
Legend has it the Daffodil first appeared in the Garden of Gethsemane, during the event of The Last Supper, it was a sign of great sorrow, and hope for better things to come. In England Daffodils are known as Lent Lilies. And, in Medieval times, it was believed that if a Daffodil drooped or wilted while you were watching, it was an omen of death.
My favourite Daffodil poem is by William Wordsworth
"I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;

March, brings with her Spring attributes; and here in T&T, this year, the season of Lent

In Canada, the stylized plastic daffodils are used, by the Canadian Cancer Society, as a fundraiser, during the month of April. In the hope, of eliminating all cancers. May this dream come true.

I did not know the legend of the daffodils. Here in my world we had an unseasonably warm February and the daffodils bloomed early, only to be discouraged by a brief return of wintry cold. They're still standing proud, however. Thank you for your lovely poem.

It was Wordsworth who made me take daffodils seriously, and now you who give me the wonderful phrase "daffodil dazzled." Thank you, too, for the stories and the song!

Daffodils have such fond memories for me too, Gillena.
ReplyDeleteAn awesome post - the haiku, I think, is a new fav of yours, for me, Gillena. "daffodil dazzled" ... such a happy evocation. The Wordsworth poem, as well, I remember fondly.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a big fan of Wordsworth, and his daffodils poem is one of my pet hates. Therefore I like your words much better! (Smile.)
ReplyDeleteNice. So pretty, the daffodils and your words. They make me appreciate Spring even more than I already do. Enjoy Gillena.

You would have to have a heart of stone not to be dazzled by daffodils!
ReplyDeleteLenten lilies is such a lovely term. Like the Wordsworth poem as well. Reminds me of childhood in the days when were required to learn poetry by heart at school. Daffodils are happy flowers just like your poem:)
