  1. Ouch! What an image! I expect pennies will be worthless here any day. As it is, Philadelphia parking meters don't take pennies, nickels and dimes. Only quarters and bills and credit cards.

Pennies are already gone here, in Canada. They were phased out because it cost too much for the copper - actually cost more than a penny to make one penny, so "poof" no more!

But your haiku is exceptional -
it really speaks and stings, from the heart
the wording is so perfect ... and I'm just struck by the use of "near a" and of course, the use of "one shoe" just really adds a new dimension to it!

and the image, the paining, is really wonderful - I think it's an excellent choice companion.

Have a great day Gillena :)

  7. A jewel of a haiku. Says so much with so few words. Conjures up an image .. a sad one. Well done.

  9. The times are a changing! Australia's lowest value coin is now 5c and has been for a few years now. However I liked the astuteness of the beggar man to ignore the 1c coin!

  11. They abolished pennies in canada some time back. A nickel is our smallest coin.

  13. Oh, damn, that is quite a striking image — something that perhaps we all have witnessed in its deprivation and poverty. It's amazing how you have captured it all, both the pain and apathy, in this haiku. Very well penned, Gillena! :-)
