A SPLUTTER IN THE DARK

smell of candle wax

spluttering in the darkness

night noises subside

❧✿❧

smell of candle wax

the night wages a blackout

scratch a match to flame

spluttering in the darkness

a light enlivened

dances with a breeze

night noises subside

only for a minute then

the dogs start barking

smell of candle wax

the dancing flame now snuffed out

tinge of burnt fingers

the night wages a blackout

flicker by flicker

a response of light

scratch a match to flame

let there be shadows to wall

for darkness punctured

spluttering in the darkness

a stumble here there

gets to the fridge door

a light enlivened

sits atop a heavy stand

too secure to shift

dances with a breeze

a rustle of leaves proclaim

the end of a flame

night noises subside

to silhouettes stationed cue

in trees spread silent

only for a minute then

ticking clock sounds on

rhythm meanders

the dogs start barking

scent of crepe jasmines float in

night cradles her time
