TIME OUT
first snowflake, the front door slightly ajar
a howling wind, i curve into my conscious self
Santa his cherry cheeks, mall decor delights
a familiar face oh, but no smiles in cold weather
hot chocolate, cinnamon sprinkled marshmallows
subway passengers, head scarved coat wrapped
gifts in gift boxes, no extra paper wrappings
relatives, names etched in each post card sent
busy bees phone to say, see ya next time
numbers dates flights, airport signs and waves
three syllables at Arrivals Counter, returning
in the reality of greenness, hankering for home

"I fought with all my strength to keep my hands and feet anchored to their holds, but the
noise of the water seemed to take me to another place. It was a mysterious and distant place where nothing that was happening at that moment was at all important, and it was a place that I could get to if I had the strength.[Carpe Diem]

It maybe well here to note the use of words in Zen, the way in which silence and speech are one thing. In all true Zen language and conversation, that is to say, whenever two minds are really in communion, any given word connotes its logical opposite as well. So if we say "selflessness", it means, in conjunction, "selffulness". "Loneliness" is also a state of interpenetration with all other things. Thus Basho (1644-1694) says, aspiring to be in this state:

ah, Kankodori,
deepen thou
my loneliness
