A Box of Confections

chocolate delights--
the sweet taste of your lips
lingers all night

this Valentine’s eve
I’ll have no other sweets--
the day is long

an east wind blows
the nectar of your scent
fills my being

my eyes overflow
with your dark beauty
Spring dream

ecstasy--
cherry blossoms, you
and chocolate
--John Daleiden; Phoenix, AZ

Since the days of the Aztecs chocolate has been used as a gift. Today a box of luxurious quality chocolate says a thousand "thank you's", "good luck", or "I love you". Chocolate can be given as a way of saying "congratulations", "I am sorry" or "get well soon". On Valentine's Day chocolate clearly says "I LOVE YOU!" Chocolate is more than food, it not only fills your belly but also makes you feel soooo good.

Cocoa plantations and estates are usually located in valleys or coastal plains, and must have evenly distributed rainfall, and rich, well-drained soil. A mature tree has 50,000 or even 100,000 blossoms in one year

Hot chocolate, yummy, or as I have on my blog, hot cocoa. Growing up we didn't have these mixes that come with sugar, only unsweetened cocoa which my mother mixed with milk and added sugar to taste. For extra richness, a dollop of whipped cream on top.

Scientists have discovered that chocolate was invented at least 3,100 years ago in Central America and not as the sweet treat people now crave, but as a celebratory beer-like beverage and status symbol. Researchers identified residue of a chemical compound that comes exclusively from the cacao plant - the source of chocolate - in pottery vessels dating from about 1100 BC in Puerto Escondido, Honduras.

My paternal grandmother, Veronica Mitchell(whom we fondly called Dee)(many years deceased), used to grind cocoa beans which she would shape into cocoa logs and balls, to be used for making hot chocolate. Dee sold them, along with herbs and spices in the old Chaguanas market revisit Dee
