...Gardner went to the lighthouse alone after that. Each time he returned exhausted, his eyes glassy, his limbs limp, his skin pale. He collapsed into his bed and slept for hours. Whenever a rainstorm threatened, he became agitated. Before the first drop fell,he was off again to the lighthouse his bag on his back, his cane in his hand.
